My latest publication in Femina Magazine No.18/XXXVII (2-8 May 2009), in the Indonesian language. Femina is a women's magazine circulated in my country.
Background of the article: Parents of upper-middle class in big cities in Indonesia have the tendencies to speak in mixed Indonesian-English languages or even (almost) 100% English to their kids, although both parents are Indonesians. Nowadays, it's very common to hear parents code-switch between English and Indonesian or use a broken English while speaking to their very young kids. Further, those who can afford private educations send their kids to bilingual English-Indonesian or English-only schools.

My three contributions are published in this very issue:
1. "A Tale of a Global Nomad Family and their Third Culture Kids. An interview with Suzanne Barron- Hauwert". Suzanne is author of Language Strategies for Bilingual Families. She graciously agreed to be interviewed on the Third Culture Kid (TCK) and Global Nomad topics, during her hectic last days in Chicago, USA. Suzanne now lives with her family in France.
2. "Kelompok Bermusik dan Berkarya: Our Music & Art Group. Creating an Indonesian playgroup". When my eldest kid Joseph was two years old, my friend Ake and I formed a structured playdate called Kelompok Bermusik dan Berkarya (KBB) or Music and Art Group. The aim was for our kids to sing children songs and create some artworks, all in Indonesian language. Coincidently both of us had some teaching experiences, thus we had pretty clear concepts on how we wanted it to be. We wrote a proposal for ourselves and agreed to let Ake handle the art and me the music. As a start, I made some piano arrangements to accompany the singing, and she came with tailor-made activities that fit our little group. Includes "Tips for Language Playgroups".
3. "The Legacy. A poem about home". It's about homesickness towards places I used to live as a child.
Check the magazine over here, you can even ask for a free issue. Please do consider subscribing, it's just $12 a year!
