Disney cartoon The Lion King, in French Le Roi Lion, stole my heart from the moment I watched it in Jakarta back in 1994. It's one of my favorite Disney ever. Besides its pretty African landscape and well-written scenario, the choices of characters and well-composed soundtracks are the things I'm crazy about. When my mom and I went to visit New York City in 2003 *Nico and I were still living in the Netherlands and Joseph still in heaven*, we took the chance to see its Broadway play in Time Square. From our perfectly located seats, which left my wallet empty by the way, I was squealing with excitement and opening my eyes widely during the whole performance. The casts, the music and the stage setting were superb which made it as one of the best plays I've ever seen. On our way out of the theater, I told my mom we were just watching an 'outstanding Disney meets excellent Broadway' performance. My mom agreed, at least for the Broadway part since she never watched the screen version.
Cartoon-wise, I especially love the opening clip with its classy theme song Circle of Life. It gives me goose bumps each time, yes each time I listen to it. The scene of the monkey priest holding baby Simba above his head and the other animals bowing their bodies, glues my eyes to the screen whenever it appears. Both picture and music show a grand moment of the jungle kingdom, witnessing their newborn heir for the first time.
At home, Joseph enjoys watching Disney cartoons and we have Lion King video with French and English tracks. Initially, I thought it would also be nice to hear the theme song in French. I was wrong. The French dubbing turns such a beautiful song into less than ordinary one. The combination between the voice of the singer and the French lyrics make the song lifeless in my ears. Since such soulless start changes the spirit of the whole movie, I thus change the audio into English during the opening clip and return it to French for the rest. It works. The movie stays vivacious as ever and Joseph keeps learning French.
I got the clip from You Tube. Can anybody guess what fruit the monkey priest holds and cracks open? Is it coconut?

The Lion King is definitely my favourite Disney, I understand your love for it. I was brought up in French (but went to a Dutch school) and so some of my Disneys were French-spoken (and back then you couldn't switch the language :D). So I learned to love this movie and its songs in French. I've watched many Disneys in English since then, but I find myself longing to whatever version I grew used too as a child. But I agree that many songs are performed much better by the original artists, and I also find myself switching between languages during songs.
It's something I really love about DVDs, all those extra language options are like gifts you get alongside the movie. I often subtitle English-spoken movies with English for the hearing impaired to improve my spelling.
Yeah I found it also nice with all those language options on DVD. In the US, there are usually only 3 language options (French, English, Spanish) but in Europe, gosh, there are like more than a dozen of them!!
Lion King I is very nice and touching and it's still one of my faves. Too bad the 1.5 version spoils it all, LOL.
Incidentally, I can recommend The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning, it is noticeable a lot more thought and love went into this prequel, and it was kinda cute to see Ariel's mom.
Other people have wondered about Rafiki's fruit

I'm guessing it's artistic freedom, or maybe a really rare and exotic fruit?
